How Do You Back Up an iPhone to the Cloud?

Backing up an iPhone to the cloud is easiest with iCloud Backup: open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud > iCloud Backup, and turn on Back Up This iPhone. It runs when the phone is locked, charging and on Wi-Fi. For a second copy of photos and files, add Google Photos, OneDrive or Dropbox camera upload.

Option What it backs up Full restore to new iPhone? Free space
iCloud Backup Settings, app data, Home Screen, messages and more Yes 5 GB shared
iCloud Photos Photos and videos (synced, not a separate backup) Photos only 5 GB shared
Google Photos Photos and videos Photos only 15 GB shared with Gmail and Drive
OneDrive camera upload Photos and videos Photos only 5 GB
Dropbox camera uploads Photos and videos Photos only 2 GB on Basic
Computer backup, then cloud Full device backup via Finder, then a cloud backup of the computer Yes Depends on your backup service

What iCloud Backup Includes

Apple says iCloud Backup includes app data, Apple Watch backups, device settings, Home Screen and app organisation, iMessage, text and MMS messages, photos and videos, and purchase history, among other items.

There is an important catch. Data already synced to iCloud is usually not duplicated in the backup. If iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud is on, those items live in iCloud separately and are not part of the backup file.

What You Need Before Backing Up iPhone to the Cloud

  • Your iPhone on Wi-Fi and plugged into power.
  • Your Apple Account password.
  • Enough iCloud storage for the backup. Check in Settings > [your name] > iCloud.

Step 1: Turn On iCloud Backup

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap iCloud, then iCloud Backup.
  3. Turn on Back Up This iPhone.
  4. Tap Back Up Now to run the first backup.

Keep the phone on Wi-Fi until it finishes.

Step 2: Check What Will Be Backed Up

In Manage Account Storage > Backups, tap your iPhone. You will see the backup size and a list of apps. Turn off large apps whose data you do not need, such as offline video apps, to save space.

Step 3: Confirm the Backup Finished

Go back to iCloud Backup. Under Back Up Now, look for the date and time of the last successful backup. If it is not today, the backup has not completed. Our guide to a backup stuck can help.

Step 4: Add a Second Copy of Your Photos

iCloud Photos is sync, not an independent backup. If you delete a photo, it is deleted everywhere after 30 days. Add a second service for photos you cannot replace.

  • Google Photos: install the app, sign in, and turn on Backup in Photos settings.
  • OneDrive: in the OneDrive app, turn on Camera upload in settings.
  • Dropbox: turn on Camera uploads in the Dropbox app.

Each service uses its own storage. Use only one second service to avoid battery drain and duplicates.

Step 5: Protect Your Backups With Encryption

With standard data protection, Apple holds the encryption keys for iCloud Backup. Turn on Advanced Data Protection in Settings > [your name] > iCloud to make iCloud Backup, Photos and Drive end-to-end encrypted. Apple then cannot help you recover data, so set up a recovery contact or recovery key first.

Step 6: Consider a Computer Backup Too

You can also back up your iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC, then back up that computer to the cloud. This gives you a second full device backup without paying for more iCloud space. Back up the computer with a service from our backup cloud services list.

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking iCloud Photos is a backup. Deletions sync. Keep a second copy.
  • Running out of iCloud space. Backups stop silently. See fix iCloud storage.
  • Never checking the last backup date. A backup that stopped months ago gives false comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does iCloud back up my iPhone?

iCloud Backup runs automatically about once a day when the iPhone is locked, connected to power and on Wi-Fi. If any of those conditions is missing, it waits. You can also start a backup any time from Settings, then your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup and Back Up Now.

Does iCloud Backup include my photos?

Only if iCloud Photos is turned off. When iCloud Photos is on, your photos are stored and synced in iCloud separately, so they are not duplicated inside the backup. Either way, photos are in iCloud, but remember that synced photos deleted on one device are deleted everywhere.

Can I back up my iPhone to Google Drive instead of iCloud?

Not as a full device backup. Only iCloud and a computer backup can restore your whole iPhone, including settings and app data. Google services can back up photos, videos and contacts from an iPhone. Many people use iCloud Backup for the device and Google Photos as a second copy of pictures.

How much iCloud storage do I need for an iPhone backup?

It depends on your apps and whether iCloud Photos is on. Many backups are a few gigabytes when photos sync separately, but they can grow much larger. Check your backup size under Manage Account Storage and Backups. The free 5 GB is often not enough once photos are included.

Is iCloud Backup encrypted?

Yes. iCloud Backup is encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers. With standard data protection, Apple holds the keys and can help you recover data. With Advanced Data Protection turned on, iCloud Backup becomes end-to-end encrypted, so only your trusted devices hold the keys.
