Is Backblaze Cloud Storage Worth It?

Backblaze cloud storage is worth it if you want simple, unlimited backup of one Mac or Windows computer at a flat price. Backblaze Personal Backup copies your whole computer and connected external drives, with no file size limit, and offers an optional private encryption key. It is not a sync service, and it has no Linux app for personal backup.

Plans and Pricing

Backblaze charges per computer. According to its site, the personal plan costs $9 per month, $8.25 per month billed yearly ($99), or $7.88 per month billed every two years ($189). Business backup and B2 storage are priced separately.

Prices can change; check the Backblaze Personal Backup page before buying.

How Backblaze Backup Works

After you install the app, Backblaze scans your drives and starts backing up user files automatically. It excludes system files and applications by default. Changes are picked up continuously or on a schedule you set.

There is no need to pick folders, which is why I recommend it to non-technical family members. The app runs quietly in the background.

Encryption and Privacy

Backblaze encrypts files on your computer before they upload. You can add a private encryption key so that only you can unlock your backups. With that key set, Backblaze cannot reset it, so losing it means losing access.

Backblaze is a US company, so US law applies. Read our cloud privacy guide if jurisdiction matters to you.

Restore Options

  • Web download: select files and download a zip. Free and good for small restores.
  • Mobile apps: access backed-up files from iOS or Android.
  • USB drive by mail: Backblaze ships a drive with your data. Its site says you can mail it back within 30 days for a refund.

For a full computer, the shipped drive avoids downloading hundreds of gigabytes.

Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage

B2 is Backblaze’s object storage, billed by the amount you store. It is not an app you install; you use it with backup tools like Arq, NAS apps like Synology Hyper Backup, or rclone. It suits NAS owners and technical users who want control over retention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Backblaze really unlimited?

Backblaze Personal Backup offers unlimited backup per computer, including connected external drives, with no file size limit, according to its plans page. It excludes system files and applications by default. External drives need to be connected regularly, or their data can be removed from the backup after a period.

Can Backblaze back up a NAS?

Backblaze Personal Backup does not back up network drives or NAS shares. For a NAS, use Backblaze B2 cloud storage with the NAS’s own backup app, such as Synology Hyper Backup or QNAP Hybrid Backup Sync, and pay for the storage you use.

Does Backblaze work with Time Machine?

Backblaze runs alongside Time Machine but does not back up Time Machine drives themselves. It backs up your Mac’s files directly to the cloud, while Time Machine keeps a local history. Together they follow the 3-2-1 approach of local and offsite copies.

Is Backblaze secure?

Backblaze encrypts files before they leave your computer and over the connection. For stronger privacy, set an optional private encryption key so only you can unlock your backups. Use a strong password and two-step verification on your account. Remember that if you lose the private key, Backblaze cannot recover it.

How do I restore files from Backblaze?

Sign in on the Backblaze website, choose the files or folders, and download them as a zip for free. You can also access files through the mobile apps. For a large restore, order a USB drive with your data; Backblaze refunds it if you return the drive within 30 days.
