What Counts as Cloud Storage News?

Cloud storage news covers anything that changes how your files sync, back up or stay private: service outages, price and plan changes, retired apps, new limits, security features and privacy policy updates. On syncfix.cloud, we focus on changes that need action from you, and we link each one to the fix or guide that helps.

How We Cover Cloud Storage News

Every news post on this site follows the same rules:

  1. Official sources first. We link the provider’s own announcement or status page.
  2. Dated clearly. Each post shows the date of the event and the date we last checked it.
  3. Action-focused. We say what changed, who is affected and what to do.
  4. Linked to fixes. Posts link to the guide that solves the resulting problem.

Changes From Recent Years That Still Affect You

These are older changes, but they still cause many of the requests we receive.

Google Backup and Sync was replaced

Google retired its Backup and Sync app in favour of Google Drive for desktop. If you still follow old instructions, see Google Backup and Sync is gone.

Google Photos counts toward your storage

Since June 2021, new photos and videos backed up to Google Photos count toward your shared Google storage. This is a leading reason for full accounts. See Google Drive storage full.

Apple added Advanced Data Protection

Advanced Data Protection makes iCloud Drive, Photos, Backup and more end-to-end encrypted. It changes recovery options, so read cloud privacy before turning it on.

Resilio Sync folded Pro features into its free download

Resilio’s site now says the free download includes features previously limited to the paid Sync Pro plan. See our Resilio Sync review.

Why News Matters for Privacy

Privacy policies and encryption options change. A provider may add end-to-end encryption, change where data is stored, or update what its systems can scan. Following these changes helps you decide whether a service still fits your needs.

Common Myths

“If something big changes, the app will tell me.” Notices are easy to miss in email or app banners.

“Price changes only affect new customers.” Many changes apply at renewal.

“Outages mean data loss.” Most outages affect access, not stored files.

For the fundamentals behind the news, read file sync. For fixes when changes break things, use our sync issues checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the latest cloud storage news?

Check each provider’s official blog and status page for confirmed changes and outages. Our News and Outages category covers changes that affect syncing, backups and privacy, with links to official sources and fixes. You can also subscribe to our newsletter for alerts about major incidents.

How do I know if a cloud service is having an outage right now?

Open the provider’s official status page: status.cloud.microsoft for Microsoft, the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for Google, status.dropbox.com for Dropbox and Apple System Status for iCloud. Crowd-reporting sites can hint at problems before official confirmation, but treat them as clues only.

Why did my cloud storage suddenly fill up?

Common reasons include photo backups counting toward your quota, large email attachments, device backups and items in the recycle bin. Since June 2021, new Google Photos uploads count toward Google storage. Check your provider’s storage breakdown to see what changed, then clean up the biggest category.

Do cloud storage price changes affect existing customers?

Often, yes, usually at your next renewal. Providers typically announce changes ahead of time by email or in the app. Review renewal notices, compare current plans, and consider whether a different plan or provider fits your needs better before the new price applies.

How do app updates affect my sync settings?

Major updates can rename menus, reset some settings, sign you out or change how files appear in File Explorer or Finder. After a big update, open the sync app, confirm you are signed in, check your folder and on-demand settings, and run a quick test file.
